EXCURSIONS FROM THE SQUARE

November 01-07, 2010

LOS ANGELES
THE GLITTER AND THE GETTY
with an optional extension to San Francisco

Travel with us once again to the City of Angels founded by missionary farmers in 1781. Explore this incredible sprawling metropolis, from its most popular landmarks in HOLLYWOOD and BEVERLY HILLS to its remarkable museums and diversity of architectural styles. We will visit the GETTY CENTER, set on a dramatic hilltop site in the Santa Monica Mountains, and spend a day enjoying the spectacular art and architecture in PASADENA. Special highlights on our agenda are OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS CATHEDRAL, designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, and the WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL, designed by Los Angeles native Frank Gehry.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1 – Depart Philadelphia or your home city this morning for Los Angeles. Upon arrival, transfer to the HILGARD HOUSE HOTEL, conveniently located in Westwood Village, near the campus of UCLA. An afternoon walking tour will give us a chance to become acquainted with the neighborhood and, if time will allow, a stop at the nearby HAMMER MUSEUM before an included dinner in one of Westwood’s trendy eateries.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2 – Our morning sightseeing tour in Los Angeles will include the Wilshire corridor to downtown LA where we will see the BRADBURY BUILDING, the BILTMORE HOTEL, the art-deco EDISON BUILDING and the LOS ANGELES CENTRAL LIBRARY. The new OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS CATHEDRAL and the WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL are among the striking post-modern buildings of Los Angeles included in our itinerary. Lunch is included today prior to a visit to the FREDERICK R. WEISMAN ART FOUNDATION, a spectacular venue for modern art. OPTION: ENJOY THE TRENDY SHOPS AND DINNER NEAR THE PACIFIC OCEAN IN SANTA MONICA.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 – This morning we have planned a visit to the GETTY CENTER, the fabulous art complex designed by architect Richard Meier. We will take a train up the mountainside to the museum where we will have the opportunity to take an architectural tour and see the vast art collection of billionaire John Paul Getty. The adjacent gardens, designed by Robert Irwin, provide splendid views of Los Angeles.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4 – Depart in the morning for PASADENA, where we will visit the GAMBLE HOUSE, the Craftsman-style bungalow designed in 1908 by Charles and Henry Greene. We will spend a relaxing afternoon in the San Gabriel Valley at the HUNTINGTON LIBRARY, ART COLLECTIONS AND GARDENS, with lunch on your own in a tearoom on the grounds. A GUTENBERG BIBLE and Thomas Gainsborough’s masterpiece THE BLUE BOY are among the treasures we will find at the former home of railroad magnate Henry Huntington. Our last stop is the NORTON SIMON MUSEUM, one of America’s greatest collections of European, East Indian, and Southeast Asian art, before returning to our hotel where there are dozens of nearby restaurants for you to enjoy.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5 – With the convenience of our motor coach, we will enjoy a guided tour of Los Angeles’ innovative residential architecture in WESTWOOD and WEST HOLLYWOOD near our hotel. Our tour will include the architecture and sculpture garden at UCLA. Then on to MALIBU where we will visit the newly reopened GETTY VILLA dedicated to Greek, Roman and Etruscan arts and culture. You can have lunch on your own in their café. Dinner is included this evening. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6 – Our last day in Los Angeles is free to explore the city on your own. You can take a tour of the interior of Frank Gehry’s WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL or visit the LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART (LACMA) and their newly opened BROAD CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM designed by Renzo Piano. On view will be EYE FOR THE SENSUAL: SELECTIONS from the RESNICK COLLECTION including works by Boucher, Fragonard, Rubens, Ingres and more.

OPTION: EVENING PROGRAM OF DEBUSSY AND STRAVINKY OF THE LA PHILHARMONIC PERFORMING AT THE WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL WITH PABLO HERAS-CASADO CONDUCTING AND PETER SERKIN AS SOLOIST.
